No grave markers are found. 11 Joseph and a group of friends went on a hunting trip. After a successful hunt he sent everyone home, saying that he wanted to hunt by himself. That was the last time he was seen alive. Sometime the next year his skeleton was found and he was identified by his clothing and personal possessions. A different account of the story was relayed to me be a descendant of Joseph, Joni Bilbrey Smith. "Joseph went hunting with one of his slaves. They made camp and Joseph left the slave to watch over the camp while he went out hunting. The area was one of the most snake infested areas in MS." "After a couple days had gone by and Joseph did not return to camp as he said he would, the slave closed camp and took the horses back to the home place. Yes, the next year bones were found in the area where Joseph went hunting and were believed to be those of Joseph Hale."
